While it’s true that when you visit the Arctic you’ll be traveling to one of the world’s most remote and spectacular destinations, summer at the top of the world is surprisingly comfortable, if you pack wisely. An expedition cruise is unlike any other vacation. You’ll spend your days doing Zodiac landings, hiking across tundra, watching glaciers calve into the sea, and scanning the horizon for polar bears, whales, and seabirds. The secret to enjoying every moment? Dressing in layers and bringing the right gear.
Think Layers, Not Bulk
Summer temperatures in the Arctic typically range from the mid-30s to the low-50s Fahrenheit (2-10°C). Conditions can change quickly, with sunshine giving way to wind, fog, or rain in just a few hours. A good layering system includes:
- Moisture-wicking base layers
- A warm fleece or lightweight insulated mid-layer
- A waterproof and windproof outer jacket
- Waterproof pants for Zodiac excursions

Waterproof Boots Are Essential
You’ll almost certainly be boarding Zodiac boats for shore excursions, and almost all landing are water landings (stepping out into at least ankle-deep water). While many expedition cruise lines provide waterproof boots or the opportunity to rent them; check with your travel advisor before departure.
If boots aren’t included, bring them, along with:
- Thick wool or synthetic hiking socks
- Extra socks in case your feet get damp

Don’t Forget the Accessories
Small items can make a big difference in Arctic comfort. Even on cloudy days, sunlight reflecting off glaciers and snow can be surprisingly intense, so be sure to pack:

- Lightweight gloves or insulated waterproof gloves
- Neck gaiter or buff
- Warm beanie for windy deck viewing
- Sunglasses with UV protection (polarized lenses)
Bring a Daypack
A small waterproof backpack is perfect for carrying:
- Water bottle
- Camera gear
- Extra layer
- Hat and gloves
- Snacks
- Sunscreen
Many shore excursions last several hours, so you’ll appreciate having everything within easy reach.
Camera Equipment You’ll Actually Use
The Arctic offers some of the most incredible wildlife photography opportunities on Earth. Many expedition lines will have some camera gear on board for purchase or trial. Consider bringing:
- Camera with a zoom lens
- Extra batteries (cold weather drains batteries faster)

And don’t underestimate today’s smartphones—they can capture amazing landscapes when paired with the right lighting.
Sun Protection Matters
It may seem surprising, but sunburn is absolutely possible in the Arctic. You should always pack:
- Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Polarized sunglasses
- A baseball cap for sunny days
The reflection from ice and water increases UV exposure, especially during the long daylight hours of Arctic summer.
Binoculars Are Worth Their Weight
Wildlife sightings often happen at a distance. Even if your expedition team provides spotting scopes, having your own binoculars enhances every wildlife encounter. Consider bringing a quality pair of binoculars to look for:
- Polar bears
- Arctic foxes
- Walrus colonies
- Puffins
- Whales
- Seals
Casual Clothing Is Perfect
Expedition cruising is about adventure, not formal nights. Most expedition cruise lines, Linblad included, have a casual onboard dress code. Most evenings onboard call for:

Leave the cocktail attire at home. The focus is on exploration, expert lectures, and swapping stories from the day’s adventures.
Motion Sickness Remedies, Just in Case
Even the most experienced travelers can encounter rough seas, especially when crossing areas like the Denmark Strait or the Fram Strait. If you’ve ever suffered from motion sickness, consider packing:
