Traveling to Europe This Summer? 10 Things to Know

by Jun 19, 2026

Europe remains one of the world’s most popular summer travel destinations, and for good reason. From the sun-soaked beaches of the Mediterranean to the charming villages of the countryside and the iconic cities rich with history and culture, there’s something for every traveler.

If Europe is on your summer travel wish list, here are the top 10 things you should know before you go.

1. Book Popular Attractions Well in Advance

Gone are the days of simply showing up and buying a ticket at the door. Europe’s most popular attractions (including museums, landmarks, and guided tours) often sell out weeks or even months ahead during the summer season.

If visiting iconic sites is important to you, make reservations as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Booking a tour with “skip the line” access is also a smart move! Another great way to see popular cities are unique tours, like a vintage Fiat 500 tour in Rome or a behind-the-scenes tour of Parisian bakeries.

2. Be Prepared for Long Waits at Airports

The European Union recently rolled out EES (the Entry-Exit System) that’s been causing delays at major airports, sometimes very long delays. Travelers arriving into the EU will need to do a couple of extra steps upon arrival and exit, namely facial scans and electronic fingerprinting. When choosing flights that include a layover in the EU, it’s very important to give yourself at least 3 hours, and then when you’re heading home make sure to get to the airport 3-4 hours before your flight. Your Key to the World Travel advisor can help you navigate this new system!

3. Shoulder Destinations Are Having a Moment

While Europe’s iconic capitals like Rome and Paris remain popular, travelers are increasingly exploring destinations such as Puglia, Sardinia, Slovenia, Montenegro, the Azores, and Northern Portugal. These destinations offer incredible scenery, authentic cultural experiences, and often fewer crowds than their more famous neighbors.

4. Pack for Heat

Summer temperatures across Europe have been climbing in recent years. Southern Europe in particular can experience extended periods of high heat, especially in destinations like Greece, Spain, Italy, and Southern France.

Lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle are essential travel companions.

5. Trains Are One of the Best Ways to Travel

Europe’s rail network remains one of the easiest and most scenic ways to move between destinations. High-speed trains connect many major cities, often eliminating the need for short-haul flights.

Booking rail tickets in advance can provide significant savings and guarantee preferred departure times.

6. Dining Reservations Matter More Than Ever

Popular restaurants in major European cities fill up quickly during the summer months. If there’s a special restaurant or culinary experience on your list, don’t wait until arrival to secure a table.

A little advance planning can make the difference between enjoying a dream meal and settling for a backup option. Your travel advisor can make recommendations and help you secure reservations!

7. Cash Isn’t King Everywhere

Many European destinations have become increasingly cashless, with contactless payments accepted almost everywhere. However, it’s still wise to carry a small amount of local currency for smaller shops, markets, and rural areas.

Be sure to notify your bank of your travel plans and bring at least one backup payment method. The best way to get a bit of local currency at the ideal exchange rate is to take some of out an ATM; make time to stop in the airport at an ATM upon arrival. Most EU countries use the Euro now, but there are still a few that don’t (like Switzerland), so make sure to check the currency for your destination.

8. Slow Travel Creates Better Experiences

Many travelers are moving away from whirlwind itineraries that attempt to visit five countries in ten days. Instead, they’re spending more time in fewer destinations.

Slowing down allows for deeper cultural experiences, less stress, and more opportunities to discover the hidden gems that make European travel so rewarding.

9. Local Festivals Can Be a Highlight

Summer is festival season across Europe. Whether it’s music festivals, food celebrations, religious processions, or cultural events, these local traditions can add unforgettable memories to your trip.

Checking local event calendars before you travel can help you align your visit with unique experiences.

10. A Travel Advisor Can Save Time and Stress

Europe is more complex than ever, with timed-entry attractions, transportation logistics, reservation requirements, and countless destination choices.

Working with a travel advisor can help simplify planning, secure hard-to-get experiences, and ensure every detail is coordinated before departure.

And finally…

Remember to relax and enjoy your vacation! Europe is a captivating destination, with its incredible history, diverse cultures, world-class cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes. With a little planning and the right guidance, your summer adventure can be smoother, more enjoyable, and filled with unforgettable experiences.

Whether you’re dreaming of sipping wine in Tuscany, cruising the Greek Islands, exploring the streets of Paris, or discovering a hidden coastal village, there’s never been a better time to experience the magic of Europe.
