When visiting Walt Disney World® Resort, we all have our “must dine at” restaurants and sometimes forget about the small, less talked about places. During my trip in October, I decided to step out of my dining comfort zone and try somewhere new. I made a reservation for breakfast at the Grand Floridian Café at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and was not disappointed!
People often overlook this beautiful café for character dining, breakfast in the parks or simply have never heard of it. Being on the monorail line, it’s just minutes away from the Magic Kingdom® and rarely has a wait to be seated. Reservations are always recommended for any dining location on property that accepts them but are not always necessary here. If you’re flexible with time, you can usually book here the day before.
Now let’s talk about the real star of the show at the Grand Floridian Café… the “Breakfast Enhancements”. Breakfast enhancements can be added to any pancake or waffle entree and each feature three toppings and a sauce. While they are not eligible on the Disney Dining Plan, they are very reasonably priced at just $3.50 each with three combinations to choose from.
Being the foodie that I am, my friends and I decided to order one of each combination so we could try everything! The combinations are as followed:
- Banana, Roasted Pecan, Chantilly Cream and Caramel Sauce
- Fresh Strawberries, Sugar Cookie Crumbles, Whipped Cream and Strawberry Sauce
- Fresh Blueberries, Granola, Lemon Curd and Blueberry Sauce
One combination is large enough to be shared with 2-3 people. We, of course, had to order all three, so we over indulged but it was so worth it. The caramel sauce was served warm and was delicious drizzled over my Mickey waffle. The strawberries and blueberries were so fresh, I couldn’t stop eating them. The lemon curd on pancakes was something I would have never thought to put together, but it was so refreshing and delicious. It was fun to try new combinations on our pancakes and waffles that we wouldn’t think to try at home. This restaurant is also a great, cheaper alternative to some of the more expensive breakfast options on property and the “make your own” aspect of it is really great for kids of all ages.
If pancakes and waffles are not for you, not to worry because there are some other great dishes the Grand Floridian Café has to offer. Many of their menu items are great classics with a twist such as the Lobster Benedict (two-poached eggs, toasted English muffin, lobster, hollandaise and marinated tomato salad) and the Chipotle Bloody Mary (Chipotle-infused vodka made in-house, garnished with jumbo shrimp, chorizo, and a lime-salt rim).
The staff was extremely friendly and went above and beyond to provide great service, which went along seamlessly with the amazing menu. There is something for everyone at the Grand Floridian Café and my only complaint is that I did not try it sooner! I will be back for more “make your own waffles” very soon. Give GFC a try and I promise you’ll have a new favorite spot!
