Reasons Travel Benefits Mental Health

by May 1, 2023

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and there are many reasons that travel benefits your mental health. From self-care and relaxation to helping to increase your confidence, travel is, literally, good for your soul.

(1.) Travel gives you opportunities to grow.

When you travel to a new place, you experience things that are new and unfamiliar. You can try new things. Oftentimes, you are able to step out of your comfort zone. This can help you reflect on all aspects of your own life and what is most important to you.

(2.) Get a broader perspective of the world.

When you travel, you see the world in a different way. Spending time in a new place exposes you to different ways of doing things. You are naturally removed from your everyday problems and may see things in a different way.

(3.) Renew your sense of wonder and curiosity.

Have you ever watched a young child see something new and exciting for the first time?  The look in their eyes and the excitement on their face is often priceless. That is often how it feels to travel, especially when you are visiting a destination that you are genuinely interested in. It doesn’t matter how old you are – there is a natural curiosity to learn about where you are!

(4.) Travel helps you become more mindful.

Mindfulness refers to being fully aware of all aspects of the present moment. While it is often used as a therapeutic technique to calmly accept thoughts and feelings, mindfulness often increases naturally when you travel. You tend to be more present and aware of everything around you, as well as your own feelings and thoughts.

(5.) Inspire creativity when you travel.

Traveling turns you into a storyteller. How you choose to tell that story is up to you but it’s likely that you will want to share your experiences! Whether you use photography, journaling, or recreating a new dish, your adventures are bound to inspire creativity. Who knows? It may even inspire a new hobby too!

(6.) Travel helps you stay physically and mentally fit.

When you travel, it’s easy to get moving! Think about how much you do in one day when you visit a theme park! When you’re excited to do something, your adrenaline takes over and it’s easy to do it!

(7.) Combat stress when you travel.

Traveling helps release stress. It’s a way to relax and fully appreciate the moment. Whether you are looking at something beautiful or spending time with loved ones, it’s a great way to decompress and reduce those cortisol levels!

(8.) Build resilience when you travel.

Resilience means bouncing back after difficult times. It means you can adapt to the good and bad times in life. This certainly applies to travel because sometimes, things don’t go as you plan. You have to be open-minded and flexible as things change. This is an important life skill to have, and it can be applied to any aspect of life.

(9.) Travel helps boost your happiness, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Travel makes you happy. It’s that simple, right? Everyone looks forward to a vacation. However, travel also helps boost your self-confidence and self-esteem. There are often opportunities to try new things and navigate new places.

Whether you are jumping off a 20-foot waterfall, experiencing a new attraction in a theme park, or tasting new food, travel gives you confidence. In addition, it feels good to try different things so it’s sure to give you a self-esteem boost too!

(10.) Travel helps you prioritize self-care.

Traveling is a great opportunity to embrace your own needs and self-care. This is especially the case if you are on a solo trip. So, take a long walk, enjoy the spa at your resort, or do something special for yourself. It will result in a special memory as you put yourself first!
