After years of planning unforgettable adventures for my clients, I finally took the time to create one for myself, and I couldn’t have picked a more magical destination than New Zealand. This country has been on my dream list for ages, and it completely lived up to the hype. From vibrant cities to sacred landscapes and movie-worthy backdrops, every moment was filled with discovery, beauty, and just the right amount of adventure.
Here’s a look at some of the highlights from my time in this incredible country!
Auckland: The Perfect Introduction
Our journey began in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and a perfect introduction to Kiwi culture. Nestled between two harbors and sprinkled with volcanic cones, Auckland feels like the best of city life and nature rolled into one.
We explored the bustling Viaduct Harbour, enjoyed delicious local cuisine (yes, the seafood is that fresh), and adjusted to the time change while sipping coffee like the locals. Auckland has a laid-back, welcoming energy that immediately made me feel at home. I always say a destination sets the tone for the trip in the first 24 hours, and Auckland set a beautiful one.
Rotorua: Geothermal Wonders & Maori Culture
Next up was Rotorua, known for its geothermal activity and rich Maori heritage. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip, not just because of the bubbling mud pools and steaming geysers (which were absolutely mesmerizing), but because of the deep sense of culture and community.
We had the opportunity to experience a traditional Maori hangi dinner and performance, and it was truly moving. The warmth of the hosts, the storytelling, and the pride in their traditions was powerful and humbling. As someone who helps clients seek out meaningful travel experiences, this was a strong reminder of why those moments matter so much.
And yes, the famous Rotorua scent is real (thank you, sulfur!) but totally worth it for the experience!!
Hobbiton: A Real-Life Fantasy
Of course, no trip to New Zealand would be complete without a stop at Hobbiton! As a longtime fan of The Lord of the Rings, walking through the Shire felt like stepping into a storybook. The rolling green hills, tiny hobbit holes, and iconic Green Dragon Inn were every bit as magical as I imagined.
Whether you’re a die-hard Tolkien fan or just someone who appreciates stunning scenery and quirky detail, Hobbiton is pure joy. It was whimsical, beautifully maintained, and surprisingly peaceful.
We even got to enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon as the sun began to set; talk about a cinematic moment!
Christchurch: History, Resilience & Garden Charm
We wrapped up our adventure in Christchurch, a city that surprised and moved me in equal measure. Still rebuilding and reimagining after devastating earthquakes, Christchurch is a place full of resilience, creativity, and quiet charm.
We explored the beautiful Botanic Gardens, wandered through colorful street art-lined alleys, and enjoyed a ride on the historic tram. The energy here is thoughtful and hopeful – like a city looking toward the future while honoring its past.
It was the perfect place to slow down and reflect on the journey.
Final Thoughts
New Zealand is everything people say it is, and then some! It’s clean, friendly, jaw-droppingly beautiful, and packed with experiences that feel both adventurous and restorative. What stood out most wasn’t just the landscapes (though those are unforgettable), but the people are kind, proud, and always ready to share their culture, stories, and a helpful tip or two.
As a travel advisor, I couldn’t help but look at everything through the lens of how I could bring this magic to my clients. Whether it’s a luxury escape, an immersive cultural trip, or a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, New Zealand delivers, and I’d love to help you discover it for yourself.
