Rome

When you think about a visit to Italy, many people automatically think of Rome. From the history of the Roman empire to the Vatican and the beauty throughout the city, there is so much to see and do.

If you would like to explore other areas of the country, Rome is a good starting point because many cities in the United States offer flights there. There are several options that have non-stop flights too.  In addition, Rome is not far from a popular cruise port. It’s easy to enjoy some time in Rome before sailing away through the Mediterranean or Western Europe.

Florence

Florence is the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region and is often credited with being the city where the Renaissance began. This city is an art lover’s paradise. From the Statue of David to the iconic Florence Duomo, the city is filled with history, interesting museums, and stunning views. In addition, don’t miss the Ponte Vecchio, a famous bridge over the Arno which is now home to many shops.

In addition to Florence, there are several other areas in Tuscany that are worth exploring. For example, Pisa is a must to see the famous Leaning Tower up close.

The Chianti region is known throughout the world for its red wine. Enjoy the stunning views of rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves as you explore. Another stop worth making in this region is San Gimignano. You’ll see the incredible medieval towers first as you drive through the countryside to reach this village. Make sure that you stroll through the streets and taste all the local specialties.

Things to Do & See

In Italy, there is something for everyone and every interest.

History

From the Roman empire and the tragedy of Pompeii to the origins of the Catholic church and the Renaissance, there is so much history in Italy. There are many opportunities to see this history in person, with guided tours and excursions. You can choose from a group tour or a private tour experience. Many tours include a skip-the-line benefit for the most popular attractions too.

Culture & Cuisine

One of the very best parts of visiting Italy is experiencing the food and the culture. There are many ways to immerse yourself in the Italian way of life and one of the best ways is through the food. Whether you want to tour the local market with a chef and do everything yourself or watch and learn, there’s something for you. In addition, there are wine tastings and tours throughout the country, including in the well-known Tuscany region.

Adventure

If you want some adventure during your vacation, there are plenty of opportunities to be active. Several cities have bike tours during the day and in the evening. In the countryside, you will find ATV tours and even hot air balloon rides.

While these are just two examples, you can find incredible shopping in cities throughout Italy.

What Kind of Vacation Works Best?

FIT

Free and Independent Travel, or FIT, allows you to fully customize your vacation. Although you may choose to include guided tours, you do not have a guide for the duration of your trip. This type of vacation is best if you want everything completely customized but you are not looking to travel in a group. It’s also a good option if you want to visit multiple countries in Europe or if you prefer to “go with the flow” during your vacation versus planning various activities.

Guided

There are a few options if you are considering a guided vacation. First, there are tours where you and your travel party will be in a group with other travelers. These tours include a guide and activities are predetermined. These tours are great if you are looking to see all of the major sites.

If you like the idea of having a guide or set itinerary, a private tour is another option. There is often a required minimum number of guests for this option. However, there are also fully customizable options, which are a great fit for large families traveling together or for those looking to have a privately guided, personalized experience. Your Key to the World Travel advisor can help you explore the options.

Cruise

If you would prefer to get just a taste of Italy, a Mediterranean cruise is a good option for you. Located approximately one hour from Rome, the town of Civitavecchia has a port with several cruise options available.

Getting Started with Planning

With so much to do and see, you may be wondering where to begin. It’s important to plan early, especially if you want to travel during the summer months because hotel availability in certain areas goes quickly.

Your Key to the World Travel advisor is here to help you with all of the details. Whether you prefer a guided tour, exploring on your own, or sailing through the Mediterranean, we can help you find the best fit!
