Are you looking for a little more JOY in your life? It is time for you to sail on the newly renovated Norwegian Joy! Originally built for the Asian market in 2017, she just underwent a $50 million refurbishment has made her almost identical to her sister ship, the Norwegian Bliss. She will begin sailing out of Seattle on May 4, 2019, and spend the summer cruising the waters of Alaska with seven-day cruises with visits to Ketchikan; Juneau; Icy Strait Point and Skagway, Alaska; and Victoria, B.C. Beginning this fall, she will sail to the Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles as well as the Panama Canal from Los Angeles and Miami. Beginning in 2020, she will cruise to the Caribbean from Miami.
This past weekend, Key to the World Travel® was honored to be able to sail on her US inaugural voyage from Vancouver, BC to Los Angeles and we are excited to tell you all about it!
There is a stateroom category for every type of traveler – from inside cabins to the ultra deluxe and exclusive Haven Deluxe Owner’s Suite, and everything in-between. We stayed in a mid-ship balcony, which was conveniently located near the elevators on Deck 11. It was a nice-sized room with two twin beds (that convert to a king) and a sofa bed, a closet plus plenty of shelves for storage, a decent size bathroom with a glass-enclosed stall shower, plus a balcony. The balcony provides extra space and a wonderful way to take in the surrounding views.
If you are traveling with a larger, or extended family, a Concierge Family Inside Suite with Virtual Balcony is an amazing option. These rooms have two bedrooms, two bathrooms with a living room in-between. With room for 6 guests, there is definitely space for everyone to spread out! Plus, concierge guests enjoy private dining for breakfast or lunch in a designated specialty restaurant, priority embarkation and debarkation, as well as the services of the concierge staff to help make dining and other reservations.
If you are really looking for a luxurious experience, The Haven is your answer! Guests staying in Haven rooms have access to a private pool, sun deck and a 2-story lounge with 180-degree views. Plus the services of a certified butler and concierge to take care of all on board and onshore arrangements.
With three main dining rooms and a host of specialty restaurants, you will definitely not go hungry! The main dining rooms of Taste, Savor, and the Manhattan Room offer daily changing menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Garden Café is an excellent buffet with an ever-changing selection of items to choose from. And with no fixed dining times or pre-assigned seating, guests have the freedom to dine when and where they want.
Looking for something a bit different? Choose from sushi from Food Republic, barbeque ribs from Q, American comfort food from the American Diner, or Japanese hibachi from Teppanyaki. There are specialty seafood, Italian and steakhouse options, plus the 24-hour Local Bar & Grill that offers various menus throughout the day and Starbucks as well. Reservations for specialty restaurants can (and should) be made in advance.
With the very popular Free at Sea option of unlimited beverages, it is good to know where you can get a tasty drink. There is the Maltings Whisky Bar, The District Brew House, which features more than 50 different types of brews, and The Cellars – a Michael Mondavi Family Wine Bar offers not only a variety of wines but also classes at the Tasting Table. Prefer a more Caribbean flair to your beverage? The Sugarcane Mojito Bar is the place for you! Plus there are several other bars in and around the ship to enjoy. Trust us, you will not go thirsty!
Activities and Entertainment
There is so much to do while onboard! The Norwegian Joy features pools, waterslides, a kid’s splash zone, an onboard go-kart track, open-air laser tag arena, and Galaxy Pavilion, a virtual-reality and gaming area. Guests looking to relax have plenty of options. There are plenty of loungers all around the pool deck, plus seating along the Boardwalk and in the Atrium. Several hot tubs can be found on Deck 16, and the Mandara Spa is where you can go to get pampered. Guests only need to look in their Freestyle Daily to see where to find the DJ, the next trivia game, or where their favorite musical entertainer is playing.
When the sun goes down, it is really time to kick the entertainment up a notch. Elements, which is an over-the-top display of magic, dance, and acrobatics that celebrates the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire, should not be missed! A revamped Footloose – The Musical, based on the 1980’s movie, features new choreography, designs, and orchestrations. The Cavern Club hosts a Beatles tribute band, with different shows highlighting times throughout their career. The Social features comedy acts, Q has a country band, there are musical acts all around the ship, and of course the casino, so everyone can find something to enjoy.
Splash Academy, the kids club on board the Norwegian Joy, has different programming options based on the age of your child. Turtles (3-5-year-olds) program includes parades, treasure hunt, and circus school as well as arts and crafts, active games, sensory play, developmental activities, and storytelling. Seals (6-9-year-olds) will have the chance to learn circus skills such as plate spinning and devil sticks, as well as enjoy theme nights, sports activities, active games, and arts and crafts. Dolphins (10-12-year-olds) will experience team building challenges, video games, sports, and cool theme nights. Teens (ages 13-17) have their own club called Entourage, where they have such activities as pick up basketball games, theater classes, board and video game challenges, and night-time pool parties.
